Narrated by a woman who smothers her senile mother to death, this seems to me to be a potentially good suspense story that wasn't really long enough for a novel and therefore had to be padded out with lots of rambling detail, none of which is of any great interest. We flit back and forth between the present and the past, looking for explanations as to why the woman feels the way she does about her mother.

Rating: - Depressing. It ended up in the bin.
I loved The Lovely Bones and I love exploring emotions, so when I read the back cover of this book I thought it would be another fantastic read. The Lovely Bones seems to thoroughly explore all the emotions that Suzie had throughout her short life, and relive the memories that enabled her to fully experience life. Rating: - disturbing and rewarding
I actually really enjoyed this book. I had previusly attempted The Lovely Bones twice and was unable to get past page 12 because I cried so much. This book caught my interest because I found the mother character intriguing. I think Sebold presents Helen as someone who only really begins to exist when she kills her mother. I enjoyed this book and think that the Author writes beautifully. Cannot wait for more from her. I would recommend leaving a small space of time between this one and The Beautiful Bones as the subject matter can be a bit harrowing Ithink

Rating: - Disappointing
Having enjoyed Lovely Bones, I was really looking forward to reading another novel by Alison Sebold. I found the storyline was fairly interesting but the frequent bad language was unnecessary and did not add to the plot or the characters. In fact it made the story tawdry and pathetic not adding anything to the atmosphere of the novel. I would not be interested in even finding out the name of her next novel.
